South African companies are increasingly expanding their businesses into other countries in Africa or considering expanding their businesses on the continent.
Similarly, foreign companies wanting to invest in Africa are also increasingly using South Africa and, more specifically, Gauteng, as a base to ‘explore’ business opportunities in other African countries.
The second largest and second most populous continent, Africa is blessed with vast natural resources and is fast becoming a lucrative commercial market with enormous potential for investors. However, divergent cultures, business landscapes and unique legal regulatory and political environments can make these ventures particularly challenging.

How we can help
To assist foreign companies wanting to explore the abundant investment opportunities Africa has to offer, we have set up dedicated Africa Desks in Johannesburg and New York. Drawing on the strength of the PwC network and the firm’s unique thought leadership methodology, the Africa Desk in Johannesburg has been established to assist both South African and foreign investors in coordinating the setting up and running of operations in Africa.
The Africa Desk is staffed by tax specialists from various African countries, including Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana and South Africa. The team works closely and seamlessly with colleagues in PwC offices in other African countries, and the Africa Desk in New York to help clients find solutions for challenges facing their commercial ambitions in Africa.

What we do
The Africa Desk:

  • Provides quick responses to preliminary and generic questions that companies would like answered when considering investment in Africa;
  • Facilitates investments and business operations by providing access to the right contacts for tax (and legal) advisory services to investors in Africa; and
  • Can coordinate between companies investing into Africa and respective PwC offices in other countries.

Charlotte is a Manager from the PwC Kampala (Uganda) office. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Charlotte has experience in assisting clients doing business in Uganda. She has also spent one year on secondment to PwC Accra (Ghana). During her one year secondment she gained an understanding of the tax regimes in Ghana and its neighbouring countries, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

She has assisted clients in a number of industries including oil and gas, telecommunications, mining, information technology and the service industry. She has assisted multinational corporations on several assignments including tax compliance and planning, VAT verification exercises, tax recovery, withholding tax health checks, and tax due diligences. She now works in PwC Sunninghill (Johannesburg) at the Africa Desk as part of the Corporate International Tax team.

Kingsley is a manager from PwC Accra (Ghana). He holds a BSc Administration (Accounting) degree from the University of Ghana and is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG). He is also an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana (CITG).

Kingsley has experience of dealing with a number of clients across a broad range of industries. These include energy, mining, telecommunications, financial services and consumer and industrial products.

He has project-managed a number of assignments for both local and multinational companies. These include tax compliance, tax advisory, tax health checks, negations with tax and regulatory authorities and mergers and acquisition tax support services in Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.

He is currently a member of the Corporate International Tax team on the Africa Desk at PwC Sunninghill.
