PwC Strategy& South Africa is proud to announce that on 16 May 2019 it was awarded the prestigious highly commended world procurement leader award for a consultancy project at AngloGold Ashanti. The award was given at the recent World Procurement Conference held in London.
Our entry focused on how PwC Strategy& used its expertise as well as a strong collaborative approach with AngloGold Ashanti to transform its procurement function from a transaction-focused one into a strategic one.
Michal Kotzé, PwC Africa Energy Utilities & Resources Leader and co-leader of the project says: “It is an honour to receive such an award, judged against many other quality entries. I am delighted that the excellent work of our teams have been recognised at such a global level.
“At PwC, we believe that there is a solution to every business problem and this is achieved by working together as a team of experts and assisting our clients with our expertise by making a difference in the strategic areas they operate in.
“We embarked on a supply chain transformation project for AngloGold Ashanti South Africa Region. Within 18 months we assisted AngloGold Ashanti to reduce their supply chain complexity and realised significant value by rebasing contracts to their market value.”
Mohan Sambandan, a partner in PwC’s Strategy& and co-leader of the project adds: “The project work we did for AngloGold Ashanti underlines the many complex challenges and uncertainties mining companies are facing. Our teams were combining real insight, practical experience and their knowledge to implement change for all of our mining clients that operate in this challenging environment. We are proud of their hard work and that their efforts have been recognised at a global level”.
Currently, many of SA’s mining companies are focusing their efforts on cutting costs to improve profitability in the long-term. Volatile commodity prices, vulnerable dollar-rand exchange rates, increasing cost pressures and the uncertain regulatory environment over the past ten years have negatively impacted their local operations. The risk of disruption in these companies’ supply has also increased as movements in commodity prices and foreign exchange have become more volatile.
Across all industries, strategic procurement is recognised as a vital enabler of business strategy and a preferred way for achieving cost reduction. PwC’s Strategy& provides comprehensive, end-to-end strategic procurement and supply chain solutions, including strategic consulting and specialised managed services. “Strategic Procurement transformation is an on-going journey – with our global reach and expertise we are able to meet each client’s unique needs,” comments Kotzé.
