Johannesburg, 8 September 2025 – Across South Africa’s rural communities, women are building businesses that deliver results—32% higher sales, 30% more profit and 22% more jobs created—driven by PwC’s commitment to grassroots economic empowerment through the Faranani Rural Women Training Initiative.
Empowering rural women through entrepreneurship
The Faranani Rural Women Training Initiative, founded and funded by PwC, is a capacity-building programme aimed at equipping women in underserved communities with the skills, confidence and tools to start and sustain their own businesses.
“By addressing barriers such as limited access to formal education, business networks and financial literacy, the initiative unlocks entrepreneurial potential and fosters inclusive economic growth.”
Driving measurable impact
Recent data from 65 Faranani participants surveyed from PwC’s FY23/24 FY23/24 cohort highlights the programme’s effectiveness:
“These outcomes translate into tangible economic benefits. Participants are not only generating income for themselves but also creating employment opportunities within their communities.”
With 22% average increases in household income and 72% reporting improved wellbeing, the initiative contributes directly to poverty alleviation and local economic resilience.
Catalysts for community development
Beyond individual success, Faranani fosters a culture of mentorship and knowledge-sharing. An overwhelming 97% of participants actively mentor others, amplifying the programme’s reach and impact. This multiplier effect strengthens community networks and accelerates the spread of entrepreneurial skills across rural regions.
A scalable model for inclusive growth
“Faranani is more than a training programme—it’s a blueprint for sustainable development. By investing in women at the grassroots level, we’re not only addressing unemployment but also building resilient local economies that can thrive independently.”
With continued support and proven results, the Faranani Initiative stands as a model for how targeted, inclusive interventions can unlock economic potential and drive long-term transformation.
