Ten insights into 4IR 2021

A study of the state of digital transformation in the South African mining industry.

Overview

In 2020 PwC and the Minerals Council of South Africa conducted the first study of the state of digital transformation in the South African mining industry, entitled Ten insights into 4IR. This study focuses on digital transformation and the implementation of 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) technologies in the mining industry.

Our study focuses not only on what mining companies in South Africa are doing right now with these technologies, but also looks ahead to how they see these technologies being deployed and most importantly, what expectations they have of those deployments over time.

Key subjects we address in this study include who owns and drives digital transformation in mining businesses; what has been the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on their people, processes and technologies; how they perceive the evolution of 4IR affecting their business in years to come; and what steps they are taking to transform their businesses in anticipation of those changes.
