Lebalelo Water User Association

As part of our client work, we collaborated with the Lebalelo Water User Association (LWUA) to support its members in revising their strategy and repurposing the organisation ‘to improve lives through water’.

This project produced the concept for the construction of water infrastructure in Limpopo to bring bulk raw water to mines and potable water to surrounding communities. The organisation engaged PwC to develop a business case for the R25bn infrastructure development and business transformation journey.

B4SA

PwC South Africa provided B4SA with a detailed analysis of the South African labour market, including:

  • Industry-level employment trends
  • Impact of private sector jobs on the economy
  • Potential benefits of addressing key constraints on job creation
  • Employment forecast scenarios
  • Qualitative and quantitative research on the significance of private sector employment to the South African economy
  • Strategies for increasing private sector job creation

The evidence highlighted the importance of small businesses in job creation, examined industry-level employment trends and forecasts, estimated the contribution of private sector jobs to tax revenue and other economic indicators, explored the potential economic benefits of resolving issues such as skills gaps and regulatory burdens, and projected economic and employment growth under various scenarios.

B4SA was able to utilise PwC’s analysis in multiple engagements with the Government at Cabinet level. PwC’s work emphasised the importance of addressing South Africa’s key macroeconomic challenges to accelerate economic growth, enhance employment creation, and consequently tackle the nation's pressing issues of underemployment, social mobility and regional inequality. PwC’s contribution to B4SA’s knowledge base supported the business organisation in forming a partnership with the Government in October 2023 to assist the public sector with initiatives aimed at improving the country's productivity, innovation capacity and workforce development.

FBRA Nigeria

Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance Nigeria

Reevaluation of strategic direction.

FBRA, a Nigerian Producer Responsibility Organisation, aims to enhance environmental sustainability through recycling. Despite challenges, FBRA is refining its strategy to maximise impact and address policy restrictions.

PwC assisted FBRA in creating a five-year strategy plan and a data-driven strategic framework. This involved reviewing extended producer responsibility models across various jurisdictions, analysing existing policies and regulations, considering stakeholder expectations, and examining recycling and collection data.

Single use plastic tax reforms and plastic circularity

Bottle water by the river

Nigeria’s environmental crisis from plastic waste is worsened by poor recycling systems and high single-use plastic use. The government has taxed single-use plastics in drinks industries as part of wider reforms which include reporting on industry status, evaluating current practices and proposing legal changes for better recycling.

Our firm enhanced ties with companies by leveraging past advocacy successes. We combined expertise from various units to analyse the industry and advocate for plastics circularity in the non-alcoholic drink sector, aiding in roadmap preparation, value chain evaluation and government engagement.

  • Key success metrics: Suggested a phased industry commitment implementation roadmap; the impact the industry has made in terms of jobs, taxes paid, and their self regulation initiative as producer responsible organisations.
  • Qualitative impact: Won the client’s trust to continue driving the advocacy engagement.
