COP28

Let's make climate action count

Africa’s voice at COP28 is important amid severe climate challenges. Collaboration with the global community is crucial for creative, people-centric solutions.

Solving together at COP28 for Africa

Africa’s role at COP28 cannot be overlooked. While the continent as a whole only contributes around 4% to global emissions, it is facing the immense challenge of providing affordable energy to its citizens in a way that mitigates future climate impacts. Importantly, while Africa has been and is a minor contributor, most of the continent will be more adversely affected than other continents by climate-related impacts such as floods, droughts, import tariffs and changing market conditions. Africa needs to work with the global community to solve these challenges through creative, people-focused solutions.

People in Sustainability survey

A strategic response to sustainability issues is rapidly becoming an essential part of every organisation’s business model. Aligning and ensuring buy-in from a company’s workforce on its sustainability strategy is key to accelerate progress in this area. The goal of our short survey was to identify key factors that help implement a purpose-led response to material sustainability matters, by focusing on the role, motivators and behaviours of individuals involved in these sustainability efforts.

PwC events at COP28

Central to the debate on tackling climate change and delivering on net zero commitments.

Watch our event from COP28 here.

We proudly hosted an event at COP28 on how people and the workforce play a crucial role in enabling successful sustainability agendas. People are the main agents of change for driving performance and transformation. Technical solutions will not solely solve our future challenges around food, water security, climate change and biodiversity.

Technical solutions require people with new skills and attitudes to design, develop and drive these solutions.

Where technical solutions cannot play a role in solving the impacts from these challenges, we will need societal solutions such as behaviour and culture changes that require new ways of working, skills and opportunities.

It’s an honour to represent PwC Africa at COP28 and I look forward to engaging with leaders from government, business and civil society about accelerating climate action. For Africa, the de-risking of sustainable and green investments remains a critical point on the sustainability agenda, combined with how stakeholders should address the lack of access to energy on large parts of the continent as part of the decarbonisation debate.

About the PwC Sustainability team

At PwC, we understand that for most organisations, sustainability is rising to the top of their agenda. Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and requires commitment, dedication and adaptability. By helping our clients develop and implement a robust sustainability strategy, we can contribute to their long-term success while also making a positive impact on the environment and society.

We offer a fully integrated sustainability service with expertise in multiple industry sectors, delivering a wider perspective and deeper insight tailored for each client, from strategy and transformation to reporting and assurance. PwC’s Sustainability platform helps organisations to plan, source, deliver, finance, measure and report on their sustainability ambitions and to also determine the wider impact of their activities. We’re helping future-proof businesses by making them more resilient, agile and sustainable. We focus on both the people and technical pathways for change.

Measuring sustainability performance and the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives is an ongoing process, and it's essential to continuously align efforts with the organisation’s overall strategy and values. Regularly reviewing and updating focus areas, performance indicators and targets will help ensure that sustainability initiatives remain effective and impactful. Reliable and up-to-date data is critical to accurate reporting and optimally steering an organisation. We therefore support organisations in automating the data acquisition and visualisation process, where required in close collaboration with our alliance partners.

Our global footprint, Centres of Excellence and Sustainability Academy ensure that our staff are actively upskilled, and that our efforts are amplified to advocate for globally aligned ESG reporting and performance standards. This is aimed at driving consistency, trust and transparency. We also help our clients exceed those standards through integrated projects that are driven by their business strategies and operating models.

Sustainability has a profound impact on society. It influences how we interact with the environment, how our economies operate and the quality of life for current and future generations. Embracing sustainability is not only essential for addressing pressing global challenges but also for creating a more equitable and prosperous world. It requires collective efforts from individuals, businesses, governments and civil society to make meaningful and lasting changes.

Remember, there is no Plan B because there is no Planet B

PwC Africa’s sustainability team stands ready to guide organisations through every stage of their journey.
