Operational excellence

Productivity in motion

Organisations today are navigating constant change, as shifting customer expectations, rapid technological advancement, and tightening margins reshape how value is created. At the same time, industries are converging, dissolving traditional boundaries and forcing organisations to rethink where and how they compete. In this ‘new normal’, driving operational efficiency alone is no longer enough—organisations must also rethink their operating models, unlock new sources of value, and position themselves within broader ecosystems to stay relevant and competitive. This creates an opportunity to not only optimise core operations but to reimagine capabilities, partnerships, and growth pathways—raising a fundamental question: what does growth look like when industries no longer exist and how can we help?

Nine domains of growth graph

How productivity fits in

As this environment becomes more complex, productivity takes on a different role. It is no longer just about reducing time or cost. It is about creating ways of working that allow value to move effectively across ecosystems aligned to PwC’s Value in Motion and nine domains of growth—how we make, build, feed, care, move, fuel and power, govern and serve, fund and insure, and connect and compute.

Collectively, these domains illustrate where growth will increasingly be found, not within single industries, but at their intersection. They also highlight why organisations must rethink how they operate internally. Success in these domains will depend not only on strategy and technology, but on the ability to work differently across functions, partners, and ecosystems.

This is where productivity strategies become central. As organisations position themselves within—and across—these domains of growth, productivity becomes a critical enabler of execution, integration, and sustained value creation. Our blog series explores how businesses can strategically support their teams in unlocking opportunities within each domain.
