Asset and wealth management

Overview

Organisations operating in the asset and wealth management industry are faced with an environment that is rapidly changing and increasing in its complexity. The industry continues to be transformed by increasing regulation, operational losses, outsourcing, advancing technology and enhanced risk management and compliance requirements. Protecting and enhancing an organisation’s reputation as well as rebuilding investor confidence and trust, have become top priorities. We offer enhanced solutions to these ever-increasing changes, and the challenges they present.

We have the largest specialist financial services practice in Southern Africa, managed by a multidisciplinary team of auditors, advisers and tax professionals. Our strategy is to bring significant business advantage to our clients through multidisciplinary teams, integrated across industry sectors, geographies and functional skills.

How we can add value

Tax issue

Our Financial Services Tax team is a specialised team of professionals who focus on advising our clients on the tax matters associated with their local, regional and international asset wealth management business. We provide the full range of tax and legal services, and advise on tax issues and exchange control matters  that may arise from the lifecycle of asset and wealth managers, including acquisition structuring, ongoing tax and exchange control compliance, and formulating exit strategies.

Sustainability issue

Sustainability risks are top of the World Economic Forum’s identified global risks. While building trust through better communications is one approach, the future value of an asset and wealth manager will be strongly tied to:

  • Demonstrating responsible investment practices: Long-term investors should consider their investments through the ESG lens to assess risks and generate sustainable risk-adjusted returns.
  • Embedding an approach to optimise value: Related to the Sustainable Development Goals, internal monitoring and external communications need to record the story of contribution. This requires refinement of strategy and quality performance information beyond traditional metrics.

Growth

Asset and wealth managers are constantly looking for new ways to grow their business by assessing new potential markets and product expansion opportunities across geographies and client segments. An increasing component to this is technology-led models that are increasing the reach of traditional business models.

We believe consistent growth is the result of practical insights and step-by-step guidance to help realise strategic objectives. Our approach has helped leading asset and wealth managers focus on their greatest strengths to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace by growing their revenues, assets under management and client base.

Digitisation

Digitisation has transformed much of the financial services industry, yet many asset and wealth management firms have remained largely on the sidelines. The shift to digitisation is inevitable and while firms have taken steps at front-end digitisation, middle and back office digitisation is now essential to realise further benefits.

The firms that work with our global and experienced network of professionals master the digitisation challenge and accelerate change through use of capabilities such as robotic process automation (RPA). These firms have given themselves a head start in capitalising on their advantages, raising expectations for their business through stronger client relationships, reduced operating costs and enhanced risk management and regulatory compliance capabilities.

Performance measurement & GIPS compliance

The competition amongst investment managers is intensifying and stakeholders of financial institutions are increasingly critical with respect to performance presentations, demanding ethical behaviour, transparency, credibility and trust. Clients are also becoming more sophisticated and demanding - they expect high-quality reporting and analysis of their performance. With performance measurement and analysis getting more complex, special know-how is required.

A solution is state-of-the-art performance measurement and analysis techniques and compliance with industry ethical standards on investment performance presentation, for example through Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS).

We’re a leading provider of GIPS verification and consulting services to investment managers around the world, assisting clients with implementation, compliance, and verification issues related to GIPS.
